The case was all over the social media and everyone has suddenly become experts in home affairs, blasting their commentary on the comment.
In a two-paragraph statement released by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Wednesday night, Oct. 30, the man was named as 44-year-old Erramalli Ramesh. He is, according to the MHA, a Singaporean who earned his citizenship on the sponsorship of his local-born Singaporean wife, under the Family Ties scheme. The MHA said Erramalli is being investigated by police for an offence of intentionally causing harassment to a security officer at Eight Riversuites, the condominium he lives at.
Here’s the MHA’s full statement:
“The Police are investigating a report which was lodged against a 44-year-old man, Mr Erramalli Ramesh for an offence of intentionally causing harassment to a security officer who was deployed at Eight River suites condominium. The Police take a stern view towards any abusive behavior against security officers who are carrying out their duties.
Mr Erramalli is married to a local-born Singapore Citizen. He obtained his Singapore Citizenship on the sponsorship of his wife, under the Family Ties scheme.”
In view of such events, many have despised the acts of Ramesh for being too arrogant but very few have looked in the mirror and reviewed also their own behavior in the same manner that they have commented on Ramesh. Even if he is a foreigner, is it then okay for Singaporeans ourselves to be arrogant. So perhaps the real issue is the behavior then and not his nationality. Then so, do we have instances of Singaporean behaving with a strong sense of entitlement. As a front line salesperson, I can tell, we do have and most customers behave with traces of the “Ramesh Syndrome”.
There will be however many cultured and well-behaved Singaporeans within us and I do hope that such behavior can also be exemplified openly as well and not only just focusing on the negative. Just like some watches that only focus quietly on bringing the best value to the customers without the fluff and buff.
